What’s In A Name?

I think names are one of the most important choices that a writer can make.  It’s the first thing that tells us something about the character, and the first opportunity for a writer to influence the reader before getting down to the rest of the character development – you wouldn’t imagine the same situation or personality for a Chantelle as you would for a Maud, for example.  For my main characters, especially in short stories, I usually try to pick a name that gives a clue about the overall plot and not just that character.  Sort of like an easter egg in my stories for the readers to find 🙂

The protagonist in Pink Mist is giving me a lot of problems, name wise.  Nothing I think of really fits her.  So it got me thinking, have there been any books where we never knew the name of the protagonist?  After a bit of a google I discovered that yes, there are quite a few!  So now I’m wondering if I can write the whole book – and series – without ever giving her a name.  As an assassin I think she could very easily operate without anyone knowing her real name, but would it matter to the story as a whole if she was that anonymous?  Would it matter to you, as readers, if you read a book where you had no idea of the protagonist’s name?

One of the most famous books that has a certain anonymity to it is Moby Dick.  Now I must admit, this is a book that I haven’t read but I do know the story and in particular, the opening sentence.  It’s this line, just three words, that gives the anonymity to the character: Call me Ishmael.  In these three words so much is given away.  He didn’t say “my name is…”, but instead chose to be vague telling the reader they are to call him Ishmael, which many could take to mean that’s his name. But he never actually says that it is.  From this we know right out that we should question everything else that he tells us, as he has manipulated the tale from the very first words.

So, in that instance the name itself didn’t alter the character or the reader’s view of his story, but the way the name was introduced.  If we don’t ever introduce a name for a character, how then would that change a reader’s view of them and what they say or do? Perhaps that’s just the thing to add more aloofness to a sassy assassin 🙂

Worth A Thousand Words

I’ve been focusing a lot on my writing recently, which is good as I want to be a writer! But it has meant that my website here, and author page on Facebook, have been very much lacking in content.  And for that I’m sorry. I do, however, have lots of things to be going on here and on FB to keep them much more active 🙂  Watch this space for some short stories and updates on my novel in progress, along with a contest or two that I hope to launch in the not too distant future.

My website is probably going to have a bit of an overhaul. But as that’s a big job and I didn’t feel like tackling that just yet, I decided to work on my author page on FB first.  Yesterday I played around with Photoshop (I forgot how much fun that is to play with!) and some free-to-use pictures, and came up with an awesome new FB cover for my author page!  Well, I think it’s awesome 😀  Hopefully you will too.

UrbanFantasyFBCover

I tried to get the cover to show some of what my novel is about, as a picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words.  In my novel’s world there is both magic and technology, but they are kept very seperate with only a few who can walk the line between both sides.  I think the cover captures this without needing an explanation (though I just gave you one anyway lol), and I hope you guys and girls agree 🙂

I have some more artwork to add to the mix soon by a very awesome and tallented illustrator! More on that later…

Oohh the intrigue! 😉

Guest Blog

Today I’m taking a trip – literally and digitally!  The digital trip is over at Steve McHugh’s author site, where I’m guest blogging for today 🙂  Check it out here: https://stevejmchugh.wordpress.com/2012/08/30/world-domina-ahem-building/

While you’re there, take a look around – Steve has recently released his first novel, Crimes Against Magic, and right now it’s only $3.99 on Amazon (or £2.62 on Amazon UK)!

Now, away I go for my physical trip…which sounds rather sinister when I put it like that, but really isn’t.  I would mention that I’m going to Coldstone, but in this context I’m not sure it helps things get less sinister!

Hurray For Backups!

Some of you may have noticed a day ago that my website had a few…hiccups on the layout and content department.  I made the mistake of doing a theme update and it completely messed up my layout.  Minor frustrations turned into bigger ones because I tried to fix it but no matter what changes I made, nothing changed on my site!  Thankfully, my husband keeps a backup of everything so I asked him to revert to the last one – which he misread and reverted to January which gave me another freak out at the content loss lol!  But, he fixed it and all is well now.

But it got me thinking.  I have so much on my computer that I don’t back up regularly and I really should.  We’re currently preparing to be hit by Tropical Storm Isaac (which may or may not turn into a hurricane) and if my computer got damaged I have backups of some things, but definitely not all.

So today that’s what I shall be doing.  We have an emergency kit to rival most zombie apocalypse kits – no joke lol – and now I shall add my writing and photographs being backed up too.

The moral of the story is: don’t pull faces at your husband for keeping regular backups of your website.

Story A Day vs WiP

So, the Story A Day challenge worked really well for what I set out to do!  Day one refreshed my mind.  At day two my brain was switched back on in writing mode and I had a flood of ideas for my WiP that have made me so excited to work on it again.  Day three I was still working through the ideas in my head for my WiP while I wrote Death By… (which is possibly my favourite story of them all).  Then at day four I made the mistake of forcing myself to write a Story A Day instead of actually working on my WiP, which is what I really wanted to do.

I temporarily forgot how the Story A Day challenge was a tool for me, to get my brain back in writing gear, and instead I forced myself to work on a challenge story instead of the project that I was doing this all for!

Which means, for now, no more Story A Day stories because I’m really eager to get back to my WiP!  The ideas I’ve had basically mean I’m changing the whole world-building for the novel.  This is no small task and I’m wondering if it hasn’t sunk in yet just how much work I have ahead of me because instead of feeling nervous, I’m really excited by it 🙂  Which is why I know I need to work on that instead of the challenge for a while.  My brain is back in writing gear, my enthusiasm is soaring and the fun is absolutely back in writing for me!

I will be writing some more Story A Day stories, I enjoyed doing them and still have a couple of ideas that I want to get out at some point.  But for the time being, they won’t be every day because I really need, and want (woo!), to work on my WiP.  And that’s the most important thing, to get the novel written 🙂

Wish me luck!
